New Account!

2 min read
I know, I know.  I haven't been updating this or Captain-Galant all that much lately, but hear me out.

I've decided that 2009 is the year I'm going to make money with my creative talents--namely photography and art.  As such, I'm currently in the works to finish my professional photography website at www.photobypope.com.  It's not completely finished yet, but it's getting there.  The trick is getting the word out.

About that new account the title mentions.  Because I'm becoming more serious about my photography and art, I've decided to have an account that features my best images in a gallery specifically designed to entice purchases.  No, that doesn't mean I'm getting a DA print account, mostly because I have a professional quality wide format printer at home that can make prints much cheaper than DA sells them for.  Why get a 4" by 6" print through DA if the same amount can get you an 8" by 10" directly from me?

So from now on, any original artworks or photos I'm particularly pleased with will be posted in my new account at :iconpatricktcpope:.  Photo-Cap will probably not be updated again, although I will keep Captain-Galant for the various fun stuff I draw or snap a pic of.  The galleries of both accounts will not be deleted, so as to not lose the many faves and views on the images.

So check out my new account at :iconpatricktcpope:.  Right now there are reposts of my best images, but there will be new images soon.

Prints For less than $5... WOW! www.deviantart.com/deviation/5…

Wow, with a new baby, work and the general mayhem of life I've completely neglected my photo account.  It's been nearly a year since my last post, which is just too long.

But life has continued.  We had a baby who's now just shy of eleven months (so you know where a lot of my pictures come from these days), I've managed a trip to the southeast and got a couple photos, and I've started working with the Olympus system as a side to my regular Nikons.

Actually, I bought a little Olympus E-420 specifically because it was small and portable while offering near pro-level camera control and found I've been blown away by the image quality and useability.  At the moment my Oly system is very small with only a couple lenses, a small flash and a used E-300 body to compliment/backup my E-420 "main" camera.  (The E-300 cost me $150, so it was really hard to pass up)

Anyway,  I've been getting more serious about my photography and have decided that 2009 is the year I go whole-hog with it as a career and business.  This includes serious quality prints, a couple books I've been toying with in the back of my mind, and of course the obligatory weddings and corporate clients.  I've been doing some photography with my design business, but I want to move it to the forefront.  We'll just see how it works out in this economy.

I really need to update this thing more often.  :blushes:

So I ran out of steam for my Photo of the Day project.  :(  There's just not much to take photos of around here, and I didn't want to 'cheap out' by clicking a pic of one of the cats and slapping that up as the day's photo.  It was a good idea, but I underestimated the lack of interesting subject material.

Speaking of cat photos, Cranky Kitty and Praying Kagura are so impossibly popular!  I never would have thought those 'grab shots' would turn out so well and be so well received.  Big thanks to those who have faved and/or featured those images in journals or news reports.  I simply can't keep up with all the faves and comments that come in on those two!

I haven't really done much photography lately anyway because, well, as mentioned before, there really isn't that much to take photos of at this time of year, or in this part of the country.  The leaves are just now starting to poke their little green heads out on the trees so everything's not looking so dead.  Maybe once everything blooms and fills out I'll have more photo opportunities.

That's about all to report right now.  The wife and I are in the process of starting a new business that we hope will set us up to bring more moolah into the house and the baby's getting bigger all the time.  We also have a little shop on cafepress that we're working on stocking with some of the more popular images from our galleries as well as some new, custom designed pieces.  I'll be sure to announce once things are all pulled together, as I'm sure you're all just dying to head over there and spend some money.  ;)

Take care everyone!

Well, it's 2008, the year of the rat!  I've already decided that 2008 is going to be a great year.  We're having our first baby, I've set up the business to be more successful and profitable with a really well thoughtout and implimented marketing plan, and finally I've started an ambitious new photo project.

2008 will be the year of my Photo Of The Day Project.  Granted, this is nothing new or innovative as a lot of photographers through the years have done simmilar projects, but it's new for me.  It will force me to look at the world around me more creatively and really strive to record my everyday life in a way that seems visually interesting.  It's not enough to just point the camera at a wall and say, "there, today's photo!"  No, it has to be at least somewhat good or interesting.  Since I don't lead a very interesting life and rarely find myself in unusual locations surrounded be unusual people doing unusual things, I think it will be a welcome photographic challenge.

Anyway, the big question I've been pondering is:  Do I use whatever camera I have at hand, relying on the final image to be enough of a challenge or do I take a "one camera, one lens" approach and essentially "dedicate" a camera to the project?  So far I've been leaning toward the first option, but at the same time I've half heartedly cleared the schedule for my D2H if I should decide to go "one camera, one lens."  We'll see, I suppose.

But, since I haven't done much with DA lately, I imagine this is as good a forum to present the photos as any.  Here's hoping I don't run out of steam January 3rd. ;)
