Description

On a recent trip to the dep South I found a little time to get a few images around my work schedule. Let's just say that the drive from St. Louis to the Florida area can be pretty grueling.

I was on my way to photograph a lighthouse I'd heard about along the coast as the sun was setting, but I didn't make it before it got too dark. However, as I was crossing a bridge I saw a beautifully picturesque scene over the side. better yet, just over the bridge was a parking lot for a boat landing, so naturally I was out of the car and half way back over the bridge on foot as quickly as possible.

I took my Nikon D40 and 18-200mm lens mostly as a backup in case my Olympus (which I was still breaking in) gave me issues. As it turns out, the Oly worked perfectly, but I was glad I had the extra reach of the 18-200mm lens. I think this goes to show how even "entry level" equipment can provide exceptional image quality. The D40 hoofers another advantage over my massive D2H and D200 cameras... it's amazingly light and portable. I was traveling light on that trip and wouldn't have taken something as large and heavy as the higher-end Nikons at all. So in this case, the size of the D40 spelled the difference between getting the shot and going home empty-handed.
